10 infallible tips for children to love eating vegetables

Vegetables are one of the great workhorses of the pediatric age. While there are children who enjoy eating them, it is true that many find it a real headache.

And there is a dissociation between the health recommendation (vegetables are a splendid source of fiber, minerals and vitamins) and the taste of the little ones. Following, with the help of chef Rodrigo de la Calle, we provide a series of tips to ensure that children do not want to get under the table when we tell them that it is time to eat vegetables.

1- Run away from overcooking. Overcooking some vegetables, such as crucifers (cabbage, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts) creates an unpleasant sulphurous odor. It is advisable to cook them for less time, or to use alternative cooking techniques to cooking, such as the wok, the grill, the bake or the grill.

2- Encourages vegetable snacking. Eating a handful of nuts (over five years of age), biting into a piece of apple, or some bread with tomato are an excellent snack, full of health.

3- Make fun presentations. He introduces playful elements and trompe l'oeil into his homemade vegetable preparations. Childhood is play, and the element of "surprise" will help them to enter fully into the world of vegetables.

4- Set an example. When parents welcome plant foods, it is easier for the child to like them too.

5- Introduce vegetables in family celebrations. Give vegetables a greater presence in festive and family celebrations, until now covered by meat, seafood and fish. Remember, for example, the traditional Catalan "calcotadas", where sausages and grilled meat coexist harmoniously with vegetables.

6- Stroll through the field and discover. Walks in the countryside can be a good excuse to directly taste vegetable elements, as well as to discover what the plants that give the pumpkins, peppers, tomatoes, blackberries, grapes, etc. are like.

7- Take the children to do the shopping. Involve children in the shopping process. Children will be surprised by the great colors of the plant world.

8- Create your own garden. Create a small urban garden, where children are interested in the life cycle of vegetables.

9- Introduce vegetable elements in smoothies and juices. Don't be afraid to create. Invent your own smoothies and / or vegetable juices, of natural base.

10- Tell your children that vegetables are important for health. Become an ally of pediatricians and nutritionists, and explain to your children that eating vegetables, fruits, vegetables, cereals and legumes is like putting money in the health bank.
