The height and weight of the child
Genetic factors influence the rate of growth and weight of a child in the first place. Whether or not the toddler will be tall in the future, or in this respect will stand out from his peers depends on whether his parents and grandparents are tall. It is worth noting, however, that for several years we have been talking about acceleration phenomenon, which is manifested in the fact that subsequent generations grow taller and grow faster in some respects than their ancestors. This means that there is a high probability that our children will be taller than we are.
Whether or not also matters the child was born on time. As a rule, premature babies are usually smaller and finer, but they quickly catch up. However, children who are born from multiple pregnancy are smaller. It often happens that in subsequent pregnancies larger children develop and they are born heavier than their siblings.
What else affects the height and weight of the child? It is very important diet of an already born childthat should meet all the basic needs of the toddler. Growth is also affected by movement, preferably in the fresh air, which has a positive effect on this process.
This is not all, of course. Usually it also matters sex: girls are usually shorter than boys. Children grow quickly if properly they sleep a lot. This process may slow down excessive stress and lack of sufficient adult support. Children who have not experienced enough love are usually smaller and shorter.
The height and weight of the child and the course of pregnancy
How big a baby is born depends on the diet of the pregnant woman, her living conditions, and taking care of herself. Growth can slow down smoking during pregnancy, drinking alcohol, large amounts of caffeine drinks (coffee, strong tea, cola), some diseases.
Newborn's average height and weight
Children are different, just like adults. It is not surprising that one newborn baby will be tiny and slim, and the other one a kilo heavier and definitely more massive. There is no perfect, newborn baby: neither in height nor in weight.
You can talk about a certain average. It fits for Polish children between 3250 and 3500, which does not mean that children weighing more than 4000 grams on birth are unusual (which is becoming more common today). Low birth weight is said when a newborn weighs less than 2500 grams.
The average height of a newborn baby is about 50 cm- 54 cm.
First year: the baby is growing the fastest!
The first year is the period of the most intensive growth. Particular achievements in this respect can be seen in first three months, when mom from day to day may have trouble putting on prepared rompers. If he buys or gets an unusually large number of them, some of them may be unused.
In the first quarter, the child may grow up even 10 cm and gain weight about 600-800 grams per month. Between 4 and 6 months, the pace increases slightly, although the changes from week to week are significant and close to the limit during this period 6-7 cm. In the second quarter, children grow on average 500-700 grams per month, in the third quarter this value decreases up to 300-400 grams per month, and in the fourth 200-300 grams per month. After completing six months, the child grows by an average of about six months another 8 cm.
On average, a child who is one year old is three times heavier than at birth and about 25 cm longer.
Jumps in height
It's no secret that children have different appetites for specific periods of development. Preferences can change from day to day. Some regularity was noted in 2, 6 and 9 months of baby's life, when a toddler grows rapidly and needs more nutrients, hence more often and more willingly.
Not all parents pay attention to percentiles. They believe that the imposition of individual values that make up the charts are an unnecessary sign of unnecessary anxiety. Of course, checking in which percentile the child is currently is not a duty, but it can be helpful and helps calm the parents who especially in the case of the first child feel anxiety if the toddler develops in a harmonious way. This fact can be checked by assessing whether the curves run in the same or adjacent intervals. In the first year measuring and weighing a child every month, and in the second and third years of life every three months.
The specialist should be consulted with a baby growth of 3 centile and below and low growth if the parents are tall. In addition, a sudden change in the curves, i.e. slowing down or sudden acceleration of the child's growth, may be worrying.
