The sugar curve in pregnancy is routine screening, which checks pregnant women for blood sugar. The goal is to "catch" all those cases where the sugar level is too high, which usually means the presence of gestational diabetes. Early diagnosis of gestational diabetes allows you to modify your diet and introduce lifestyle changes to give birth to a healthy and strong infant.

When is the test performed?

The pregnancy sugar curve is usually planned for between 24 and 28 weeks of pregnancy. This test may be done sooner if you have a high risk of diabetes or if your test results are worrying (e.g. high urine sugar).

Pregnant sugar curve - how to prepare?

For testing blood sugar levels no special preparation required. Do not change your diet or physical activity - although during pregnancy you should generally eat rational food and take care of regular physical activity (e.g. walking in the fresh air).

All you need to do is go to a fasting laboratory. This means that you should refrain from eating about 12 hours before the test. You also have to remember that you should be healthy during the examination, unfortunately even a small cold can give a false picture on examination. If you are taking any medications, ask your doctor if they will not have a false effect on the test result (e.g. beta-blockers, steroids, mood-improving drugs, etc.).

Your fasting blood sugar level will be tested in your office. It will then be checked again after drinking the glucose solution and waiting for an hour or two (depending on whether the test used 50 grams or 75 grams glucose).

The sugar curve in pregnancy - is it unpleasant?

Most women have no problem getting an examination, although drinking glucose solution alone can be unpleasant. Some, however, mention them very unpleasant, it happens that as a result of the body's response, the test even needs to be repeated.

Most often appear: nausea, vomiting, sweating, dizziness.

Pregnant sugar curve - interpretation of results

How to interpret the results after the test?

If your fasting blood sugar is equal to or less than 95 mg / L, and after an hour it is equal to 140 mg / l or less, this means that there is no reason to know gestational diabetes. The result is correct.

If after an hour the result is above 140 mg / l and lower than 199 mg / l, repeat the test, this time using 75 g glucose.

If the result is higher than 200 mg / l, this indicates diabetes during pregnancy.
