You wondered how light, sounds, smell or well-being of parents affect baby's sleep? It turns out that not as many people think. Their meaning is too often received in an extreme, always wrong way: it is underestimated or overestimated. Often, the consequences are simple to predict: the baby's restless sleep. With this article, we will try to return to balance and help all those who ask a lot of questions, look for proven tips, and even blame themselves, because their child does not sleep as they would like.

The child listens

Theoretically, newborns can sleep in any conditions right after birth. Just after returning from the hospital, they can really bear a lot: bright light, loud music, intense smells. They fall asleep in conditions in which no adult would be able to squint. A dozen or so days when the child does not react to the environment passes quickly. Then a problem arises.

As the child grows, he becomes more and more sensitive to what comes to him from the environment. Not only for the sounds little known, but those that accompany him from the very beginning. The child becomes curious about what mom is talking about, what is happening in the next room, feels the need to join a family that is playing the best. Over time, the baby just becomes more alert and easier to wake him up. For this reason, even children who slept through the night nicely and were able to fall asleep after waking up themselves, at some stages have a problem with it. Suddenly it turns out that the sounds, which until now have been ignored, reach the toddler and become interesting for him. The ticking of the watch, dad's snoring coming from the next room, a plane passing by the apartment, conversations of passers-by on the street, etc. may intrigue.

What can you do in this situation? The easiest way is to just wait. After all, it is impossible to put a child in a soundproof room, it is impossible to suppress all noise. Of course, it is worth trying to give the baby peace of mind, but not at the cost of falling into paranoia.

The science of falling asleep and sounds

What can a wise mother do? The way is to use nap time to learn. This is the perfect time for everyone to get what they need. Parents - the ability to function after the child falls asleep and the baby sleeps peacefully despite external circumstances that are not always influenced.

When the child sleeps during the day, life should go its own course. In this way, we not only get the child used to the fact that the night is different from the day, but above all we will build immunity in it, or more nicely - the ability to sleep in all conditions. Of course, the point is not to turn on the vacuum cleaner, drill in the wall, or hammer nails when our sweet baby is just falling asleep, but to not exaggerate and reduce noise levels to a minimum.

You can watch TV in the other room, talk to a friend on the phone, listen to the radio. All by maintaining a reasonable volume level. In this way, we will avoid the problem and the belief that a child's dream is only possible in absolute silence and with all persons withdrawing. This skill will be useful to every toddler in small apartments, especially if he is sleeping in the same room as his parents. In addition, maybe the parents of a several-month-old child do not have this in mind, but, unfortunately, life usually has to face different situations. A toddler who learns to sleep from the beginning with the radio on will have a simpler time. His parents will also have easier.

However, the above rules do not apply to changing sound levels. An infant will sleep easier if it is not the sounds that appear from nowhere. There is a much greater risk that the sounds that appear unexpectedly will wake up the child and that you can not do anything about it. On the contrary - it is quite normal for a child to wake up a sudden appearing sound. Especially in a room where it is quiet.

Sleep and brightness and darkness

In the evening before bedtime it is worth covering the windows. The toddler should fall asleep in the room in the dim light. During the day this rule does not apply. You should do otherwise during naps. For one simple reason: in this way both the baby and parents act to their disadvantage. Covering the windows during the day, they work against nature.

In the future, it may happen that the child will have to face sleep in different conditions: at grandma's, at the hotel, on vacation. There is no shortage of places where it is simply very difficult to get the degree of darkness that a toddler is used to. This is rarely taken into account, but in many hotels there are no thick blinds, but there are curtains, and in the summer, when it gets dark late, waiting for dusk may be pointless. An insurmountable problem for children accustomed to falling asleep in the dark can also be a lantern under the block at their beloved aunt ...

Over time, the problem can also be no light. When a child is already a few months old, he becomes aware of the world around them. He notices the shadows of curtains moving in the wind, entering the room of the animals (cat or dog), or the shapes of flowers in the pot reflecting on the wall. The basis is to guarantee your child a sense of security. Light lighting should pass the exam.

When you have to deal with difficult situations

Sometimes we have no influence on persistent and intermittent sounds that do not let even adults sleep. Being in a holiday resort, we may be unlucky and struggle with loud neighbors or the problem of a dripping tap. What can you do then?

The easiest way is to drown out the sounds that bother us. In this situation, white noise works, i.e. for example the sound of the dryer recorded on the disc, relaxing melodies (e.g. sounds of waves crashing on the shore, wind noise, sounds of the forest), or even a fan and a reliable dryer that turned on from poverty.

White noise is a great solution when we expect guests in the evening, we want to talk louder or even dance. In addition, this method will work faster at night for children who have been put to sleep at home during the nap. This is another argument that the game is worth the candle.

Attention! The white noise method is not worth using too often. A toddler can easily get used to it and protest always where he will not be able to listen to the desired sound of the dryer or the sounds of nature. It may not be a problem at home, but outside of it.

How to earn a good night's sleep?

  • Stay with your child in the brightly lit room during the day.
  • Have fun and talk to your baby as much as possible.
  • If your toddler sleeps longer than usual during the day, think about waking him up.
  • Get your baby used to normal everyday noises during the day. Keep your radio on or your favorite CD.
  • Plan, if possible, car trips during the child's nap time. Avoid the excuse for an extra nap during the day.
  • The child senses our emotions perfectly. He knows when mom and dad are relaxed and rested, and when tense and nervous. He can sense every mood change. That is why it is so important to take the right approach while sleeping. During the evening ritual, do not be nervous, because your child will sense it and certainly will not sleep. Make going to sleep a positive event with which your toddler will not have negative associations.
