Our toddler is 6 months old and he already has many colorful vegetables and fruits on his menu. He is also a master at removing food from a teaspoon and it gives him a lot of joy. To our delight, he eats carrots, broccoli, spinach and other delicacies straight from the home garden or a friend's greengrocer (the list of vegetables that a six-month-old child can and should eat is below). The time has come for the next step, which will bring us closer to shared family meals in the future. It's time for the young man to get to know the taste of meat.
During this period, the child has already used up most of the body's iron stores that it has accumulated during utero, which is why it is so important to include meat in your diet right now. It's a great source of protein, easily digestible iron, B vitamins and other minerals that are so important for the healthy functioning of the body.
Of course, a meat meal will be significantly different from our already famous pork chop. The meat given to the child must be boiled in water or steamed, and preferably from a reliable source. Until the eighth month, we will cook the meat separately, because during this period we do not yet give the child a meat stock. For the first meals I recommend choosing lean and delicate poultry meat - chicken or turkey breast. However, nothing harms our health as much as monotony, so in addition to the aforementioned types of meat, it is also worth reaching for lamb, rabbit and fish.

How much meat in your diet?

When cooking daily lunches, we do not think about the size of our portions, but in the case of meals for babies and toddlers, we should carefully control it. So it's time to make friends with the kitchen scale. Even the simplest in its design will greatly facilitate our kitchen struggles. A portion of meat for a six-month-old toddler is 10g, which is really not much. It is actually less than our one bite, and for our child is a whole daily portion and of these guidelines, as conscious parents, we should stick rigidly.

Why not exaggerate?

We should remember that excess meat in the child's daily diet can cause the accumulation of too much protein in the body, which in turn can lead to metabolic disorders, constipation, burden the kidneys, impair calcium absorption, which leads to bone weakness, and also causes irritation and problems with sleeping.

What are the risks of shortages?

However, do not avoid eating proteins, because their deficiencies are as bad as surpluses. Protein deficiencies lead to weakened immunity, anemia, malnutrition, and growth and development inhibition. So, dear parents, let us eat wisely ourselves and let our children live wisely so that they grow up healthy.

How much meat in each month?

As I mentioned above, a six-month-old child should eat 10g of cooked, lean meat a day, but with each subsequent month this portion will increase. Therefore, after completing the 7th month, the toddler will eat 15g, and at 9 months it will be 20g of meat a day. Going further, after our child has finished the year, we will serve her about 30g of meat, fish and their products, e.g. high-quality cold cuts, homemade pies and pastes daily.

Should the child eat meat every day?

There is often a question of whether you should give your child meat every day. My answer is simple. No. Let's look at meat slightly differently than a source of protein. A meal that is supposed to provide the child with a solid portion should be served 1-2 times a day, but nobody said that there are no other sources of this ingredient. We should, and even must, diversify the diet of the baby so that his body provides proteins of various origin, including animal, and the more varied the menu, the better.

Nothing serves too much, so remember the following guidelines:

  • skinless poultry should be on the baby's plate 2-3 times a week,
  • We serve red meat no more than 2-3 times a week,
  • 1-2 times a week fish (especially let the saltwater fish because of the high content of omega-3 fatty acids, so important for brain development)
  • on other days, we serve eggs instead of meat
  • We give lean meats of good quality to children aged 1-3, 2-3 times a week, and it is best if they are prepared at home, e.g. cold baked pork loin or homemade pate.
  • protein of animal origin should be replaced from time to time with protein of plant origin. Its huge deposits can be found in green vegetables, legumes (soybeans, beans, broad beans, etc.).
  • we are already sore from the information overload and our hands are burning to cut the meat, so let's get going!

How to cook meat for a child?

At the beginning we prepare two pots. In one, we cook a vegetable soup or vegetables, as usual. In the second, boil water and throw a washed piece of meat into the boiling water. Remember that raw meat is about twice as heavy as cooked. When the meat is cooked, remove it from the water, cut it and add it to the vegetables. We boil together and continue as always. We mix, cool to a suitable temperature and serve to the child.

Way to eat it

Children usually do not want to eat meat because of its fibrous consistency, so we must try to crush it so that it is not felt among vegetables. Over time, we will reduce the degree of fragmentation, thereby getting the child used to chewing and biting.

Better iron absorption

As a curiosity, I will add that it is good to serve meat in the company of ingredients rich in vitamin C. Broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, cabbage and the already famous peppers and parsley are the real treasures of this vitamin. The absorption of iron contained in meat is then much better. Therefore, let's give children meat with vegetables, and fruit juice will be good to drink immediately after a meal.

Below is a list of vegetables that should be on the child's menu when they are 6 months old:
Carrots, potatoes, pumpkin, parsley, celery, green peas, zucchini, spinach, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, corn, green beans, white cabbage, red cabbage, Italian cabbage, patison, squash, red lentils.

Vegetable puree with lamb and basil

Steam the vegetables. At the end of cooking, lightly sprinkle with basil. Cook the meat separately (lamb can be replaced with any type of meat). Combine the ingredients and crush them into puree. 6 months.

Zucchini cream with thyme

1 potato

thyme (can be dried)

butter / olive oil (version for people with allergies)

Cut the vegetables into slices and steam them - they are tastier and retain more flavor. At the end of cooking, lightly sprinkle the vegetables with thyme. Blend to cream with butter or olive oil. In the meat version, add minced meat, preferably poultry. It tastes great with half the yolk instead of meat (½ yolks every other day we introduce after the child reaches 7 months). 6 months.

Soup - cream. Cauliflower with dill

1-2 cauliflower florets
small potato
carrot
a piece of parsley
10g cooked meat
dill - preferably fresh
butter / olive oil (version for people with allergies)

Boil the shredded vegetables in a small amount of water. A few minutes before the end of cooking, add chopped dill. When the vegetables are soft, add separately cooked meat, butter or olive oil and mix - adjust the degree of comminution to the child's abilities. 6 months.

Potato puree with spinach and yolk

Potato

half hard-boiled egg yolks
butter or olive oil

Boil the vegetables in a small amount of water, add butter and boiled egg yolk. Blend. 7 months because of the yolk content.

Mashed potato and beans

Steam vegetables in a 1: 1 ratio. After cooking, add butter or olive oil and crush to puree. It is good to check if the beans have these hard fibers, if so I recommend you get rid of them. You can add an age-appropriate portion of meat or fish to such a dish. 6 months.

Golden creamy risotto

3 tablespoons raw rice
1 medium carrot
a few slices of leek (leek appears in the diet after the age of 7 months)
a handful of diced pumpkin
olive oil / butter
parsley

Grate carrots on a vegetable grater. It is time to chop finely. Stew on a few drops of oil with a little water. After a while, sprinkle raw rice and pumpkin. The dish should often be mixed and topped up with water. When the vegetables and rice soften, add parsley. The dish should not be dry, but have an almost thick, semi-liquid consistency. Remove from heat and add half a teaspoon of butter - the dish will take on a creamy consistency if you add a measure of modified milk or boiled egg yolk instead of butter. Younger children should be mixed.
Serve as a separate dish or as an addition to meat or fish. 7 months (if you eliminate the season, 6 months).

Salmon in dill sauce with mashed potato and brussels sprouts

10g cooked salmon
1 medium potato
a few Brussels sprouts
green dill
modificated milk
semolina / rice gruel
butter / olive oil
allspice, bay leaf

Boil the salmon in water with the addition of allspice and bay leaf. Cook the vegetables separately in water or steamed. In a small pot, boil about 120 ml of water, add dill, a ball of allspice and semolina (to thicken the sauce, you can use rice gruel instead of cereal). When the porridge breaks completely, a dill-like sauce without milk will form (it should not be too thick, because it will thicken evenly when it cools down). Remove the sauce from heat and cool slightly. During this time, peel the fish and crush it. Mix cooked vegetables or grate with butter or olive oil for puree. Add about 3 scoops of modified milk to a still warm sauce, mix thoroughly, and then add crushed fish.

Serve the vegetables with sauce. 6 months.

Traditional rice for a calm tummy

Two handfuls of mixed Italian food - carrots, parsley, celery, leeks with a predominance of carrots
1 small potato
10g cooked chicken breast
2 tablespoons of instant rice flakes
parsley
allspice
butter / olive oil

Toss meat into boiling water, add allspice and cook until tender. In a second dish, cook grated or finely chopped vegetables. When they are almost soft, add rice flakes and parsley. The flakes cook quickly and give the soup a slightly sticky consistency, thanks to which the dish does not require long cooking. When everything is soft, remove the pot from the heat and add half a teaspoon of butter or olive oil and cooked meat. Blend. 6 months, and in the version without meat, as one of the first dishes.
