Astronomical winter. 25th of December. South. The temperature is 9 degrees. Heat. When I leave the house, I give up my hat. I put my jacket on a tunic on a short sleeve. A scarf and thin perforated leather gloves (for beauty, not for warmth) complete the whole. A child dressed similarly. Thin cotton gloves, long-sleeved T-shirt, tights, gaiters, jacket, cotton cap, neck scarf. We meet the first child in insulated overalls on the stairs. A few years old boy. In addition to winter downy suit, he is wearing snow boots. Such with a sheepskin protruding from behind the uppers. Hands are covered with polyethylene ski gloves - those thick, stiff ones, in which the fingers cannot be bent. The head is decorated with an owl head. It's difficult to determine its thickness, but it is woolen on top and fleece on the inside. The fleece is a few centimeters thick. The icing on the cake is a thick scarf wrapped around the child's neck (that's how my mother wrapped me in a scarf when I was about to participate in a sleigh ride). In fact, only the eyes and a piece of the nose of a small man can be seen. Nothing, not my forest ... We go further.

We no longer meet anyone in the yard, but while walking around the town, we pass mothers with children. The vast majority of children are wearing clothes that would keep them warm in polar conditions. A two-year-old is actually walking past me. Each of my steps is her three jumps. Plus turnover. And he sings all the time. I am warm, the jumping toddler must be very warm, a child wrapped in layers of fleece and down (and we do not know what else, because no one has put on the suit on his bare body) it must be ... that's it. About overheating children - again. It has been trumpeted everywhere, everybody knows everything about it, and the kids are still getting dressed as if to reach the pole.

Atopy, allergy, asthma

Parents of kids suffering from these diseases, paradoxically, have it easier on this topic. They know how much harm it causes children to overheat. Atopik, who struggles with itching, bacterial superinfections and a lot of other troubles every day, cannot be dressed like an Eskimo. Excessive heat is a paradise for bacteria, a contribution to the formation of prickly heat, the reason for additional itching and, consequently, more intense scratching. I know this, I have done such harm to a child once. I dressed as for Siberia. The child returned home with a wet head, sweaty, red and screaming. The symptoms of atopic dermatitis exacerbated immediately. I dressed so with love - that it would not freeze. It did not freeze, but the effects of this event were treated for quite a long time.

Allergy to dust mites is a common condition among kids. In addition to the obvious - freezing, vacuuming, wiping and airing, in the apartment of a small allergic person there must be aboutthe right temperature. If it is too hot (dust mites like this condition) dust, which, after all, it is impossible to get rid of completely rises up, along with allergens. The result - rhinitis, cough, watery eyes. As I wrote, we, mothers of allergy sufferers, observe the tangible and rapid effects of overheating the child, and hence, we quickly cure this habit (we stop listening to grandma's advice). And what about the parents of healthy toddlers, whose overheating of children does not bring immediate results?

"Healthy" children

You certainly know houses where the usual temperature during the heating season is 25-28 degrees. Parents practically do not open the windows at all, for fear that they will let the house "cold". Kids who love tropical conditions rarely walk lightly dressed. Usually, in winter, apart from being in an impossibly high temperature, they wear a T-shirt and a proper blouse.

Necessarily for a long sleeve (because you don't wear short-sleeved shirts in winter). Newborns, on the other hand, are regularly starched because of pop-ups "out of nowhere". For a walk, the toddler is dressed so solidly that it is difficult for him to move. Accustomed to such conditions, he does not complain hot. He doesn't feel it. So are there side effects to this "warm breeding"?

Of course. We know healthy children who catch absolutely any infection and undergo antibiotic therapy several times a year. We know children with asthma symptoms who have never had it. A child who sweats when in too thick clothes is much more likely to catch an infection than a child who is cold. Chilling the body is rapid if the toddler has just become hot. Overheated kids usually have weaker immunity.

Myths that make us put on another layer

  • Removing the hat in the wind guarantees otitis! That's what my grandmother says. Instead, the doctor claims that otitis is a bacterial disease.
  • Cystitis can get from walking without slippers. Grandma again. The doctor explains this time that the cause is bacterial infection.
  • When there is a newborn baby in the house, it should be "warm as in the ear." Classic. I heard it from grandma, aunts and neighbors. The midwife had a different opinion. She undressed my child and opened the window. Little greeted the change with a cheerful kicking. She became more cheerful and the whining disappeared somewhere.
  • The child is gentle, freezing faster. Yeah. Especially those that are crazy about the playground, while the immobile parent cringes, putting his hands in his pockets.

It could be so long. Grandmothers, mothers and aunts give us old advice. Of course, there is a grain of truth in them - a chilled organism is more susceptible to infections of all kinds. The problem is that in today's apartments you can't cool down your body by walking without slippers (cool feet are not cold). We will not cool down the body of a few years, if he travels 10 meters (to the car) without a hat.

The right temperature for the child, or what?

There are a lot of "schools" when it comes to the right temperature at home. Different sources give slightly different versions of the optimal temperature, but they usually oscillate at 18-19 degrees at night and 21-23 during the day. Personally, in this respect I stick to medical recommendations. During the day the temperature does not exceed 21 degrees, at night it is around 19. According to many friends, it is cold in our home. On the other hand, we rarely visit icebergs. Unfortunately, a few minutes after entering the heated apartment, we are forced to flee. The daughter begins to scratch, gets baked, coughing, sneezing, watering her eyes, begins to drip from her nose.

What about the walk?

Until recently, there was a belief that dress the child differently than the adult's (additional layer). Currently, more and more specialists (pediatricians, doctors) recommend giving up this extra layer (which often turned out to be an additional fleece jacket, not a cotton T-shirt). Well, I am a strong supporter of the theory that ... a child is also a human being. So I dress like a human. So that it doesn't freeze and get hot. I also take into account the fact that he will run, jump and swing his balls. When getting ready for a long car ride, I take my child's jacket and hat off (this is not so obvious). Many kids spend hours in the car wearing down coats and woolen hats.

Wetsuit for the winter?

Of course. In frost, making a snowman, rolling in the snow, on a sled. Not at 9 degrees plus. If we dress a child like that now, what will we wear when the temperature drops to -9?

I recommend to all parents who are not convinced by the experience of other mothers or the position of doctors some test. Put on the same as you put on your child. Go outside and start jogging. And remember - toddler running while playing, feels the same.
